The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary is still a holy day of obligation even though it has been transferred from the second Sunday of Advent (December 8) to Monday (December 9) this year.

Catholics are required to attend two Masses:

  • one for the Sunday, December 8, 2024 obligation
  • one for the Immaculate Conception obligation (transferred to Monday, December 9, 2024)

Masses that fulfill the December 8, 2024 Sunday Obligation:

  • 4:00 PM Vigil Mass on Saturday, December 7
  • 7:30 AM Sunday, December 8
  • 9:00 AM Sunday, December 8
  • 10:30 AM Sunday, December 8
  • 12:00 PM Sunday, December 8
  • * 5:30 PM Sunday, December 8

*The 5:30 PM Sunday Mass can serve as a fulfillment for the Immaculate Conception obligation ONLY if you also attend one of the other Sunday obligation Masses.

Masses that fulfill the December 9, 2024, Immaculate Conception Obligation:

  • *5:30 PM Sunday Mass, December 8
  • 6:00 AM Monday, December 9
  • 9:00 AM Monday, December 9
  • 12:10 PM Monday, December 9
  • 5:30 PM Monday, December 9
  • 7:00 PM Monday, December 9

*The 5:30 PM, Sunday Mass can serve as a fulfillment for the Immaculate Conception obligation ONLY if you also attend one of the other Sunday obligation Masses.

At any Mass on Sunday, December 8, whether within or outside the usual schedule, the Mass setting and readings for the Second Sunday of Advent are used. The obligation for Sunday is fulfilled by any Mass Saturday evening through Sunday night. The obligation for the Holy Day is fulfilled by any Mass Sunday evening through Monday night.

In other words, a Catholic could attend Mass Sunday morning and have all the prayers and readings for the 2nd Sunday of Advent and fulfill their Sunday obligation, then go to Mass that evening (which would have all the prayers and readings for, again the 2nd Sunday of Advent) and fulfill their obligation for the Immaculate Conception. Or of course you can go to Mass either the evening of Saturday, December 7 or Sunday, December 8 and then Mass on Monday December 9 and fulfill both obligations that way.
